Make Firefox fly by building from source
Monday, June 30th, 2008iTWire: The new, record breaking, Firefox 3 web browser is the fastest version of Firefox yet. But are you really getting the biggest bang for your buck (metaphorically speaking, because, of course, Firefox is free?) You can eke out a better disk and memory footprint and higher speeds by building it yourself from the original source code.
Here I walk through just what actually happens when you run Firefox on your computer, how to download and compile the source on your own computer, and some measurements to gauge the memory usage of the official packaged release and the newly compiled version to prove to yourself the effort pays off.
